The Best Cafes and Coffee Shops in Southport

Southport's independent café scene is one of the things the town does quietly well. It doesn't shout about it — there's no Instagram-famous brunch culture, no £7 matcha latte wars. Just good coffee shops run by people who care about what they're serving. Here's where to find them.

What to look for in a Southport café

The best independent cafés in Southport share a few things: they're using decent coffee (usually from a good regional roaster), they have proper food alongside it, and they're run by someone who's actually in the building making decisions. That last point matters more than people realise — it's the difference between a place with standards and a place that's running on fumes.

Lord Street and the town centre

The covered walkways along Lord Street have a handful of independent café options that are worth knowing. The Atkinson arts centre has its own café — solid coffee, good light, and the option of browsing the gallery before or after. It's the kind of place you can spend two hours in without feeling rushed.

Further along Lord Street, there are independent coffee shops with proper espresso machines and the kind of menu that changes with the seasons. Worth hunting out rather than defaulting to the chains that are easier to find.

Birkdale village

Birkdale village has a small but quality café offering. The pace is slower here than the town centre, the seating is often easier to find, and the regulars are the kind of people who've been coming for years and know what they want. A good morning coffee in Birkdale village, before heading wherever you're going, is a better start than anywhere on the tourist trail.

Churchtown

I live in Churchtown. Bias acknowledged. But the café options here genuinely hold up. There are a couple of independent places that do excellent coffee alongside a proper food menu. It's the kind of neighbourhood café that serves the same regulars every morning and actually knows their order. That's a standard I think matters.

Southport Market

Southport Market has a coffee offering as part of its broader food market setup. It's particularly good on weekend mornings when there are more traders and more activity. Not a quiet solo coffee morning destination, but excellent for a coffee as part of a market browse.

  • Best for solo working: the café at The Atkinson — good WiFi, comfortable, not chaotic
  • Best for groups: Southport Market on a weekend morning
  • Best for a quick, quality espresso: look for independent places with a La Marzocco or Nuova Simonelli machine — this is your shorthand for a kitchen that's thought about coffee
  • Best neighbourhood feel: Birkdale village and Churchtown

The best Southport cafés are the ones that don't have a queue out the door. Explore a bit — some of the best coffee in town is in places that don't market themselves at all.
