Where to Stay

I've lived in Southport for 41 years. I know the hotels here the way you know places when you've watched them change, heard what visitors say about them at the bar, and occasionally had relatives stay in them. This is an honest guide.

The Best Hotels in Southport

The Scarisbrick Hotel, Lord Street

Victorian. Has been on Lord Street since 1845. The building is impressive and it trades on that heritage โ€” it looks more expensive than it is. Rooms are comfortable if a bit traditional in style. Good location for Lord Street restaurants and the seafront. Solid value for a character hotel.

The Vincent Hotel, Lord Street

Modern, stylish, popular with weekenders and wedding parties. Has the V-Cafรฉ brasserie which is decent for breakfast and lunch. Good base for the town centre. Rooms are well-designed if on the compact side. A bit buzzy at weekends โ€” not the best option if you want quiet.

Premier Inn Southport (x2)

There are two. One near Southport train station (PR8 1RB), one near Ocean Plaza (PR8 1RX). Neither is glamorous but both are reliable, clean, and usually around ยฃ70โ€“100 per night. If you want a fixed price and no surprises, Premier Inn is the sensible call. The station location is more convenient for town.

B&Bs and Guest Houses in Birkdale

Birkdale (the southern suburb, near Royal Birkdale Golf Club) has a handful of B&Bs and guest houses on the residential streets. For Open 2026 visitors, these are the most practical accommodation โ€” walking distance to the course, quieter than the town centre, and generally better value per night than the Lord Street hotels. Most are small operations, book directly.

If You're Coming for The Open 2026

Book immediately. I'm not being dramatic โ€” the town's accommodation was heavily committed months before May. Birkdale goes first because of the proximity to the course. If you've left it late, look at Formby (20 minutes south, L37) and Ormskirk (25 minutes east). Both have B&Bs and small hotels, and the drive or train to Birkdale is manageable.

โ›ณThe Open Championship 2026 is 12โ€“19 July at Royal Birkdale. 250,000 spectators expected. Hotels within 3 miles of the course are almost fully committed. Check availability now.
