100,000 people attend the Southport Air Show each year. A significant number of them end up watching from poor positions — too far back from the beach, obscured by the promenade barriers, without a clear view of the display line. Here's where locals actually go, and why.
📍Southport Air Show 2026 · 29–30 August (Bank Holiday weekend) · Southport Beach and Promenade · Free to attend · Marine Drive car park fills by 10am
The Best Position: Beach North of the Pier
The display axis runs broadly parallel to the beach. The best viewing is from the beach itself, north of the pier, looking out to sea at a slight angle. You're watching the aircraft at close to eye level as they pass along the display line. The pier provides a useful landmark — get onto the beach from the Marine Drive slipway and walk north. The further north you go before the crowds thin, the better.
The Promenade — Good, Not Great
The Promenade is the most popular viewing area and consequently the most crowded. It gives a clear view of the display zone but you're looking out over the beach rather than from it. Good for wheelchair users and those who need hard standing. The grandstand areas along the Promenade are free but fill early.
Ainsdale Beach — Quieter Option
A longer drive south along Marine Drive to Ainsdale gives you a less crowded beach experience. The display aircraft pass over Ainsdale too, and you may get better views of the longer-range display elements from a position further along the coast. Worth considering if you're happy to walk further and prefer fewer people.
Arrive Early or Take the Train
Marine Drive car park fills before 10am on Air Show days. I'm not exaggerating — I've seen queues forming at 8:30. Town centre car parks work but involve a longer walk to the beach. The best option is the train: Southport station (Merseyrail from Liverpool) and walk down to the Promenade. No parking stress, arrive whenever you want.
💡Photography tip: position yourself so the sun is broadly behind you — morning on the north beach, afternoon from the southern end. Aircraft displays look spectacular backlit but impossible to photograph.
