Southport Market: The Honest Guide to Market Street

Southport Market is on Market Street, a short walk from Lord Street. It's been through various phases over the years β€” like a lot of town centre spaces β€” but the current version works. Independent food traders, a proper coffee, a decent atmosphere on a weekend afternoon. It's the kind of place that's easy to overlook if you don't know about it.

What's in there

The market is a mix of food traders, independent businesses, and bar space under a covered roof. The food offer changes with traders but the standard has been consistently solid β€” street food from around the world, decent quality coffee, craft beers, and enough variety that four people with different tastes can all find something.

On a recent visit I had a decent Vietnamese bΓ‘nh mΓ¬ and a flat white that was properly made. My wife had mac and cheese. One of the kids had loaded fries. The other one had a crΓͺpe from somewhere near the entrance. Nobody was unhappy. That's the test.

When to go

Weekend afternoons are the sweet spot. Thursday and Friday lunchtimes are quieter. Saturday and Sunday bring a proper crowd β€” it feels like something's happening rather than you being one of three people in a building. Some traders don't open until Friday or only do weekend service, so the full selection is a weekend experience.

Avoid it on a wet Sunday afternoon in January when the car park on Tulketh Street is full and you've got nowhere to go. That's a different experience from a warm Saturday in May.

Parking and getting there

  • β†’Tulketh Street car park is directly adjacent β€” PR8 1NP. Reasonable rates, close.
  • β†’Lord Street and the town centre car parks are all within easy walking distance.
  • β†’The market is pedestrian-accessible from Lord Street via Market Street. Five-minute walk.

The honest version

Southport Market is not going to win awards for being a destination in its own right. It's good for what it is β€” a lively indoor food hall with independent traders and a decent atmosphere when it's busy. If you're in Southport for the afternoon and you want somewhere with more personality than a chain restaurant, it's worth knowing about.

It's also the kind of place that supports local traders in a way that matters. The alternatives are the same chains you'd find in any town. The market offers something different. That's worth a visit.
