Right then, Ainsdale Beach... If you're after a decent stretch of sand that's a bit less crammed than Southport beach itself, Ainsdale's your shout. 4.5 stars out of 5 on Google, based on over two thousand reviews, so it's not just me saying it's alright. It's open 24/7, so technically you could go for a midnight stroll if you're feeling brave (or daft).

It's a proper beach, obviously, so outdoorsy stuff only. Great for families, especially if the kids like building sandcastles or flying kites. Just be warned, the tide can come in quick, so keep an eye on them little 'uns. Plenty of space for the dog to run about too, which is always a bonus. It's good all year round, but let's be honest, it's best when the sun's out.

One thing to remember: parking can be a nightmare on sunny weekends. Get there early, or be prepared to walk a bit.
