Another Place — Antony Gormley
About Another Place — Antony Gormley
Another Place is one of the most striking public artworks in Britain. Created by sculptor Antony Gormley (the artist behind the Angel of the North), it consists of 100 cast-iron figures spread across three kilometres of Crosby Beach, all facing out to sea.
Each figure is a cast of Gormley's own body, standing 189cm tall and weighing around 650kg. They're positioned at different points between the shore and almost a kilometre out to sea, so depending on the tide, some are fully submerged while others stand completely exposed on the sand. It's a genuinely moving piece of art — and one of those places where the experience changes completely depending on when you visit.
Originally installed in 2005 as a temporary exhibition, it proved so popular with locals and visitors that Sefton Council made it permanent in 2007. It's now one of the most visited outdoor artworks in the UK.
Crosby Beach is about 25 minutes south of Southport by car — an easy and worthwhile detour if you're visiting the area. Free to visit at any time. The figures are particularly atmospheric at sunset and low tide, when you can walk out among them on the sand. There's a car park on Mariners Road and a café nearby.
