The August Bank Holiday 2026 in Southport is Air Show weekend: 29โ€“30 August. It is going to be extremely busy. 100,000+ people at the Air Show alone. Hotels fully booked weeks ahead. Marine Drive car park full by 10am. If you're planning to be in Southport for this weekend, you need to prepare differently than a normal visit.

Getting There Without the Car Park Nightmare

Take the train. Merseyrail from Liverpool to Southport runs frequently and there are usually enhanced services on Air Show weekend. Walk down to the Promenade from the station โ€” about 15 minutes. You arrive stress-free, you can leave whenever you want, and you don't spend the first two hours of Air Show day in a traffic queue on Marine Drive.

If you're driving from further afield, use town centre car parks โ€” Tulketh Street, Promenade Road, Lord Street โ€” and walk. They're further from the beach than Marine Drive but infinitely less stressful. Plan to arrive before 9am if you want central parking.

The Air Show: What You Actually Get

Free event. No tickets. Just turn up, find a position on the beach or Promenade, and watch. The display runs each day โ€” check the programme for specific timings but the main show runs roughly midday to late afternoon each day. The Red Arrows are the signature act. The RAF and warbird displays are consistently impressive.

Eating and Drinking on the Day

Every cafe and food outlet along the Promenade will be at maximum capacity. Either bring food or eat well before you arrive on the beach, then eat properly in the evening once the crowds have dispersed. I bring a bag with sandwiches and a flask every year. The kids think it's beneath them. The kids are also the ones who end up eating overpriced hot dogs at 3pm in a queue. Bring food.

Bank Holiday Monday

The Air Show is Saturday and Sunday only. Monday is the bank holiday but doesn't have a specific event โ€” which makes it a good day to walk the Promenade without 100,000 people, visit Ainsdale beach which will have emptied out, or explore Churchtown without competition for tables at the Hesketh Arms.
