Southport 2026: Elegantly Eccentric is the name of the town's year-round cultural programme for 2026. It's backed by Sefton Council, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, and Culture Liverpool. It represents the most significant injection of cultural programming into Southport's events calendar in decades. Here's what it actually means and what you need to know about it.

The Four New Events

The programme introduces four completely new large-scale events to Southport alongside its existing calendar:

  • โ†’Lightport (February 2026 โ€” already completed): Immersive light installation by Lucid Creates that transformed Lord Street into a walk-through rainbow of colour. First of the four.
  • โ†’Cristal Palace (3โ€“4 April): French street theatre company Transe Express. 15-metre flying chandelier on Lord Street. Free.
  • โ†’Big Top Festival (2โ€“3 May): World-class circus and contemporary performance. Circa and Gandini Juggling. Mix of free and ticketed shows.
  • โ†’Books Alive! (24โ€“31 October): Family literature festival through half-term week. Storytelling installations, live author events, workshops.

Why Now โ€” The MLEC Context

The Marine Lake Events Centre opens in 2027 โ€” a new 6,000-capacity live events venue on the waterfront that projects 515,000 additional visitors per year to Southport. The cultural programme in 2026 is partly about repositioning the town ahead of that opening: demonstrating to visitors, businesses, and investors that Southport is a serious cultural destination, not just a seaside town with a pier and a beach.

The Existing Events in Context

The four new events sit alongside the biggest roster of returning events the town has ever had: The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in July, the Flower Show and Air Show in August, the Fireworks Championship in September, the Comedy Festival in October. Southport in 2026 has more major events in a single year than at any point in recent memory.

The phrase Elegantly Eccentric was chosen deliberately โ€” it references Southport's Victorian history as a place of theatrical entertainment and spectacle, and is an attempt to reclaim that identity for the modern town.
