Freshfield Dune Heath Nature Reserve

Alright, so Freshfield Dune Heath Nature Reserve. It's down in Formby, technically, but it's Southport, innit? It's one of those proper wild bits of coast that you just don't get everywhere. I've been going there since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, and it's always a decent shout for a walk.

It's all outdoors, obviously, and open 24/7, so you can go whenever you fancy. It's free too, which is always a bonus, especially if you've got the kids in tow. Saying that, it's not exactly a playground – more for a proper walk and a bit of nature. Google says it's got a 5-star rating, but only from one review! I'd say that's a bit optimistic, but you can't go wrong for a free day out.

You can walk for miles along the coast here, so it's good for blowing away the cobwebs. It's a year-round thing, but wrap up warm in winter – the wind can get right through you. Give them a ring on 01772 324129 if you've got any specific questions.

Just a heads-up: parking can be a bit tricky on sunny weekends. Get there early or be prepared to walk a bit from where you park.
